Martha Mitchell Calling

Playwright: Jodi Rothe

Directed by: Lana Pepper

May 15-31, 2009

Starring: Glynis Bell and James Anthony

Sometimes referred to as the “Mouth of the South,” Martha Mitchell could have played an important role in recent American history—if anyone had taken her seriously. The wife of John Mitchell, President Nixon’s Attorney General, she is most famous for her phone calls to the press regarding the administration’s Watergate scandal. Martha Mitchell Calling fleshes out the woman behind the headlines, and in doing so, gives her the vindication she never received in her lifetime.

Glynis Bell virtually inhabits Martha’s larger-than-life personality, entertaining us with droll comparisons to Cassandra and Calpurnia, other women whose warnings about Trojan horses and Roman assassins went unheeded.
